In Israel, 31% of children live below the poverty line. JDC together with the Government of Israel launched Families First, a groundbreaking initiative that addresses the wide-ranging needs of poor families by giving them the tools to enable them to create real change and break the bonds of poverty.

Families First, works with over 3,000 families from 90 communities across Israel representing all sectors of Israeli society.  In each location,  Families First consists of three primary components: 1)  social worker who works with the family to develop a personalized plan; 2) a family mentor who assists the family in implementing their plan; and 3) access to a family assistance fund, which enables the family to achieve the goals outlined in their personalized plan. For example, the assistance fund can be used to write-off debt or for vocational training. The Families First Initiative is equipping families across Israel to become independent and ensure a better future for their children.  This is high priority as JDC has signed a commitment with the GOI and is required to raise funds for this program.
